Heritage are proud to have been asked to produce some bespoke and personalised handmade leather photo albums for two members of the Royal Family.
The number of pages was pre-determined by the number of photographs the album was to hold and a cream page block was cut and finished accordingly.
Following a very traditional style most of our page blocks include traditional glassine interleaves, a slightly see through tissue type paper that protect the photos from sticking to each other.
Our choice of large page sizes was important as the album was to accommodate not only the large photos but captions as well.
To personalise the albums first the style and font has to be chosen, customers can choose from hundreds of fonts, once the customer had decided the font we send actual size PDF proofs for approval.
Once the proofs were signed-off we make either brass or magnesium blocking dies which are used to add the gold or silver foil to the photo album cover.
Magnesium blocking dies tend to be used on single blocking jobs and brass blocking dies when a block will be used multiple times or where there is very intricate block detail such as on the RAF Squadron Diaries we produce.
The albums covers, one blue and one green were then cut from rolls of leather and are then assembled, again this process being done all by hand.
Once the leather album cover is dry the pages are added and the album is placed in a press to dry overnight.
The next day the blocking dies are used to add the personalised wording to the cover using a hot foil technique.
